What?

  • Reverse engineer and redesign the Oster Fast Feed Adjustable Pivot Motor Hair Clipper.
  • Enhance the product’s manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

How?

  • Disassembled the product, identified inefficiencies in assembly and Conducted DFA/DFM analysis.
  • Based on the analysis and the inefficiencies eliminated 13 parts (39 to 26 parts).
  • Redesigned drive lever by integrating springs, reducing two spring and reducing assembly time.
  • Redesigned the housing by incorporating snap-fit to eliminated fasteners.
  • Performed material, cost and manufacturing analysis.

Result

  • Reduced part count by 33% and assembly complexity factor  by 37%
  • Reduction in assembly time by 45 seconds per unit.
  • Lowered production cost per unit by $3.36 (7.5%).
