Reverse Engineering of Oster Hair Clipper

What?
-
Reverse engineer and redesign the Oster Fast Feed Adjustable Pivot Motor Hair Clipper.
-
Enhance the product’s manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
How?
-
Disassembled the product, identified inefficiencies in assembly and Conducted DFA/DFM analysis.
-
Based on the analysis and the inefficiencies eliminated 13 parts (39 to 26 parts).
-
Redesigned drive lever by integrating springs, reducing two spring and reducing assembly time.
-
Redesigned the housing by incorporating snap-fit to eliminated fasteners.
-
Performed material, cost and manufacturing analysis.
Result
-
Reduced part count by 33% and assembly complexity factor by 37%
-
Reduction in assembly time by 45 seconds per unit.
-
Lowered production cost per unit by $3.36 (7.5%).
