Freedom Seat
The Freedom Seat is an innovative design based on a Certified Economy Class seat that allows passengers with limited mobility to remain in their own wheelchairs while flying. Currently, no certified solutions for such an accommodation exist, though upcoming legislation in various countries worldwide will soon mandate one. Molon Labe Aircraft Seating has developed a unique solution that not only meets these new requirements but also aligns with airlines’ interests by maintaining space and revenue, ensuring accessibility without compromise.
Design Concept
Our design allows an airline seat to fold up onto the adjacent seat, creating space to securely park and lock either a powered or manual wheelchair in the front rows—without requiring extra storage for the displaced seat. If a wheelchair is not present, the Freedom Seat can function as a standard seat for non-wheelchair users, maintaining full flexibility. Our goal is to develop, rigorously test, and certify this innovative seat to meet FAA TSO-C129 standards. See the diagram below for an overview of the seat movement process.

As Lead Design Engineer, I am working on development of a groundbreaking seating concept with an innovative sliding mechanism that allows the aisle seat to move over the adjacent seat, creating dedicated space for a wheelchair. This design empowers wheelchair users to remain in their own chairs throughout the flight, significantly enhancing both comfort and independence. When not in use for wheelchairs, the seat reverts seamlessly to standard configuration, ensuring operational efficiency for airlines.
