Autonomous 'Tank'  Robot

What?

  • Designed and built an autonomous robot to compete in a modified game of "Tanks."
  • The robot autonomously navigates an arena, locates targets, and fires projectiles at opponents.
  • Key constraints included a $200 budget, a 14”x14” size limit, and the ability to reload autonomously.

How?

  • Drive System: Utilized a mecanum wheel drivetrain for enhanced mobility and precise movements.
  • Shooting Mechanism: Incorporated flywheels powered by brushless DC motors for launching projectiles(nerf balls), with an indexed loading system for consistent firing.
  • Vision and Targeting:  Integrated a Pixy camera for real-time target detection and alignment.
  • Reloading Silo: Designed a custom sliding mechanism to autonomously reload projectiles during gameplay.

Result

  • Achieved precise autonomous navigation and targeting through integrated systems.
  • Optimized firing accuracy with an indexed mechanism, reaching a rate of 10 balls per second.
  • Winner of the competition among a total of 12 teams.
